World Records Day Free
is an initiative carried out by organizations in the field of access to knowledge, discrimination and Software free worldwide. Wednesday March 31, we will devote the day to draw attention to the importance of preserving digital documents in formats that use free and open standards.
Our goal is to promote the adoption of open document formats, integrating a global network and coordinate activities to promote the importance of these concepts in the digital age. At a time when much of our work is managed through computer systems, formats and open standards are a key issue to preserve freedom and protect our documents in the future. Imagine you bought a TV that could receive only signals from a single company. Or use a phone that could only communicate with phones from the same company and not others.
That happens all the time in the computer field: an instant messaging system that communicates with another. A text document that opens with a single processor. A video is only a particular player. A website that is accessible from a single browser. Such facts would be inadmissible in any other field, however, are common in computer-mediated communication.
How many times has happened that files stored in a proprietary format became inaccessible after the software vendor discontinued support of it? How many times have you had to get a specific program for a particular company, because someone sent an important file in a format that can only be opened with the latest version of a program of this one company? How often encountered to a government website that forced him to use the software from a single supplier to exercise their rights as a citizen? That happens all the time in the computer field: an instant messaging system that communicates with another. A text document that opens with a single processor. A video is only a particular player. A website that is accessible from a single browser. Such facts would be inadmissible in any other field, however, are common in computer-mediated communication.
